The Year-Round Hawaii Yard Maintenance Checklist

Hawaii doesn't have a mainland winter, but it absolutely has seasons — a drier, hotter summer (roughly May through October) and a wetter, cooler winter (November through April). A good maintenance rhythm follows that split.

All year

Mow on schedule — weekly in peak growth, every 10–14 days otherwise — and never remove more than a third of the blade in one cut. Keep edges crisp; edging is half of what makes a yard look professionally kept. Walk the yard monthly looking for irrigation leaks, pest damage (sod webworm shows up as browning patches that spread), and anything leaning or cracking in the trees.

Dry season (May–October)

This is irrigation season. Check sprinkler coverage in May before the real heat arrives: run each zone, watch for tilted or clogged heads, and adjust timers upward gradually rather than drowning the yard in June. Fertilize at the start of the season so grass has nutrients when it's growing hardest. It's also hurricane season — June through November — so get palms and large trees thinned early. A palm trimmed in June carries far less loose material through storm season than one last touched in December.

Wet season (November–April)

Growth explodes on the windward side — expect hedges and lawns to need more frequent attention even as irrigation gets dialed back or shut off entirely. Winter is the season for the big projects: yard cleanups, new sod (it establishes beautifully with regular rain), transplanting, and landscape renovations. Watch drainage during kona storms; standing water that lasts more than a day is telling you something about grading.

Quarterly

Deep-check the irrigation controller seasonally, refresh mulch in beds (it suppresses weeds and holds moisture into the dry season), and prune flowering shrubs like hibiscus and plumeria after bloom cycles rather than into them.
