Zoysia: the island all-rounder

Zoysia cultivars like El Toro and Empire are the most popular lawn grasses on Oahu, and for good reason. Zoysia forms a dense, carpet-like turf that crowds out most weeds, tolerates moderate shade, and stays green with less water than bermuda. It grows more slowly than other tropical grasses, which means less mowing. The trade-off: it establishes slowly from sod and can build thatch over the years, so an occasional dethatching keeps it healthy.

St. Augustine: the shade specialist

If your yard sits under monkeypods or mango trees, St. Augustine handles shade better than nearly anything else that will grow a real lawn here. It's coarse-bladed and spreads fast via runners. It wants more water than zoysia and can look ragged if scalped, so set the mower higher and keep it fed.

Bermuda: for full sun and hard use

Bermuda is what you'll find on sports fields and golf courses — it loves full sun, repairs itself quickly, and shrugs off foot traffic. In a leeward yard with kids and dogs, it's a strong choice. It will not tolerate shade, and it grows aggressively, invading beds and requiring frequent mowing in summer.

Seashore paspalum: the salt survivor

For beachfront and near-ocean properties from Kailua to Ewa, seashore paspalum is the standout. It was bred to tolerate salt spray and even brackish irrigation, keeps a fine, attractive blade, and handles Hawaii sun well. It's less common at garden shops, so plan on ordering sod.
